Privacy policy

RuralPros (ruralpros.ca) is a directory of rural and off-grid contractors, run from Vancouver Island, British Columbia. We collect as little as we can, we don't sell personal information, and we follow BC's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA). When you browse the site

There are no accounts, no ads and no tracking cookies. To count visits and clicks we record:

• the page you viewed, and the listing or contact link you clicked (phone, website, email, source)
• the website you arrived from (for example a search engine or an AI assistant), as a site name only
• an anonymous visitor code, made by scrambling your IP address and browser type together with a secret that changes every day. We never store the IP address itself, and the code can't be linked from one day to the next
• whether the visit looks like an automated bot

Your browser also keeps two small notes in its session storage for this tab only — the site you arrived from and the last RuralPros page you viewed — so we can tell which pages lead to which. They are deleted when you close the tab and are never used across sites. If you choose light or dark mode, that choice is saved in your browser so it sticks; it never leaves your device.

We use this to see which pages are useful and to send each listed business a monthly count of views and clicks on its listing. Those reports contain totals only, never information about individual visitors.

Business listings

Listings are built from public sources: the business's own website, industry associations, public registries and business directories. Each listing shows its source and when we last checked it. Some listings, such as sole proprietors, include a person's name, phone number or email address. If that's you, you can ask us to correct or remove it at any time and we'll do so promptly — see Contact.

Quote requests

When quote requests open, we'll collect what you enter in the form: your name, email, phone number, rough location and a description of the job. We share it only with the contractor or contractors you agree to on the form, so they can reply to you. We erase your personal details 12 months after you send a request (30 days for spam), keeping only an anonymous record for our statistics. You can ask us to erase them sooner.

Contractor accounts

When owners can claim their listing, we'll use the email address they sign in with to confirm the listing is theirs and to send their monthly report. Paying for any optional service never changes a listing's verification status or the order listings appear in.

Who processes data for us

We use trusted service providers to run the site: Vercel (hosting), Supabase (database), Cloudflare (domain and email routing) and our email provider. Some of them store or process data outside Canada, including in the United States, where it may be accessible to authorities under those countries' laws. Each is bound to use the data only to provide its service to us.

Keeping it safe

All connections to the site are encrypted. The database only lets the public website read published listings; everything else is accessible only to our own server and to us.

Your rights

You can ask to see the personal information we hold about you, have it corrected, or have it deleted, and you can withdraw consent for anything you agreed to. Email hello@ruralpros.ca and we'll respond within 30 business days. If you're not satisfied with our answer, you can contact the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for BC.

Changes

If we change how we handle information, we'll update this page and the date at the top before the change takes effect.
